Soul Train is an American music variety show that was aired in syndication from 1971-2006. The show primarily featured performances by hip hop, soul and R&B artists, although gospel, disco and jazz artists have also appeared. The series was created by Don Cornelius.
A consortium led by Magic Johnson in 2011 brought the rights to Soul Train from MadVision.
Johnson's group planned on producing a cruise, potential stage adaptations and a potential film project Cornelius had briefly mentioned before selling the franchise. Reruns of the series also began airing as part of the sale by Johnson's Aspire TV channel.
Cornelius continued to appear for Soul Train ceremonies and documentaries up until his death in February 2012.
